Winery Lielacher Gainfarn is part of the spa town of Bad Voeslau. Here wine-growing developed very early on excellent vineyard sites. The history of our family can be traced back as far as 1690. Since the end of fiefdom in 1848, our family has owned an agricultural estate which today covers about 75 acres, including 25 acres of back-pine forests and 10 acres of vineyards. Along the so-called "Sonnenweg" or "Sun Path", there are the vineyards of our full-bodies red wines and our fragrant white wines. There is a gravel bank dating from the ice-age in the centre of the Gainfarn basin where our mild and wholesome red wines with a special dark colour come from. Our wine list includes such varieties as Blauer Portugieser, Zweigelt, Cabernet, Merlot, Welsh Riesling, Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc, etc. A specialty of our winery is a variety called "Alte Reben" or "Old Vines". Since 1988 the grapes of our oldest vineyards (30 to 50 years old), which were planted with a large variety of different vines, have been vinified separately. Old vines have extensive roots and can therefore absorb more mineral substances. Their yield, however, is smaller so that the fewer grapes are tastier. The wine is dark red and has a pronounced mature fragrance and a mild and full-bodied flavour. Our guests enjoy our comfortable tavern with the romantic inner court-yard, where we sell our wine by the glass. It is called a "Heuriger" and its sign is a tuft of pine-branches on the outside. Fresh grape juice and "sturm" (young wine in full fermentation) you can taste at the "Voeslauer Grape and Juice Cure" in front of the thermal spa at the end of August.
